Back for another week of fun and frolic. This show had the “wow” factor going on…stay tuned and we’ll tell you why.

We talked about lemons and had more great tunes on the playlist.

Playlist:

(opener) Stang’s Swang – Stevie Ray Vaughan
Meal Ticket – Elton John
Hard Habit To Break – Chicago
Do The Dirty Bird To Dallas – Matt Adam Daniels (sadly, the Falcons lost…but we tried to pump the enthusiasm)
Paradise – Beth Browne
Five Forever-Bobby Tomberlin
You Play Me Like A Radio – Twangtown Paramours
Too Proud To Beg – Luther Vandross
Drive My Car – Beatles
Ready To Run – Dixie Chicks
A Song For You – Norwood
Wow – Molly Hunt
He Only Broke My Heart – Molly Hunt
Love Me Love Me Not – Molly Hunt
Roll With The Changes – REO Speedwagon
I Got A Woman – Ray Charles
I Go Crazy – Paul Davis
It Keeps You Runnin’ – Doobie Brothers
(closer) Goodnight Sweetheart – Spaniels

We had in our second hour a young singer/songwriter, 14 year old Molly Hunt. She and her family just moved to Nashville six months ago and already she is attracting some serious notice in town. She’s had a chance to co-write with some fine songwriters and is readying some songs to present to labels. Molly is poised, talented, confident and appears to have the package for success. One of her songs we played, “Wow”, lived up to its name. The word prevailed for most of the rest of the interview (especially with T.J., who couldn’t stop saying it). It’s really exciting for us to have these new rising talents guest with us and watch and see how far they go in their careers.

Wendy V’s Ponderings: There are a lot of people out there who are disabled or for some reason can’t get around very well right now (myself included due to a hip problem). I was blessed this weekend by a lovely 16 year old girl at one of the big grocery stores who helped me to my car with my bags (being very early, I was actually able to park up front), out of the scooter and into my car. The night before, I couldn’t even do my shopping there as I would have had to park at the very end, far from the door…I wouldn’t have been able to walk that far. Looking to do a random act of kindness? Those of you who are able-bodied and have no problem walking and carrying groceries….how about parking a few spaces down from the front of the door and help some of us out? We don’t all have handicapped hang tags, but we would appreciate it. The exercise will be beneficial to you…if only I can be so lucky to right now.

We were back after another two week break, getting ourselves in the groove, even though we were both on the sick list. T.J. was battling the crud and me a cough that sometimes made me a bit hoarse…thankfully my voice held out for the most part. Not only that, I had a mishap with my car a couple of hours before the show and blew out my right front tire. So I wondered if I was even going to make it. But AAA showed up promptly and I was back on the road and there in time (just like T.J. said I would be).

We had for you on this first show of 2011 a celebration of Elvis Presley’s birthday (he would have been 76). Here’s the playlist of many of his songs that ranged through the full stretch of his career (along with other great classic tunes).

Playlist:

(opener) Stang’s Swang – Stevie Ray Vaughan
Blue Moon of Kentucky – Elvis Presley
Hard Headed Woman – Elvis Presley
Baby’s Gotten Good At Goodbye – George Strait
Don’t Be Cruel – Elvis Presley
When My Blue Moon Turns To Gold Again – Elvis Presley
Too Much- Elvis Presley
Fool Such As I – Elvis Presley
Champaign Life – Ne-Yo
One Night With You- Elvis Presley
Moody Blue – Elvis Presley
I Never Loved A Man – Aretha Franklin
Kentucky Rain – Elvis Presley
Heartbreak Hotel – Elvis Presley
Hound Dog – Elvis Presley
Do The Dirty Bird To Dallas – Matt Adam Daniels
In The Ghetto – Elvis Presley
Your Cheatin’ Heart – Elvis Presley
Crying In The Chapel – Elvis Presley
Branded Man – Merle Haggard
Suspicious Minds – Elvis Presley
Good Time Charlie’s Got The Blues – Elvis Presley
Return To Sender – Elvis Presley
(closer) Goodnight Sweetheart – Spaniels

We shared many Elvis facts during the show. T.J.’s Thoughts on Things was a reaction to the Arizona shootings that had taken place that day. I introduced a new segment called Rockin’ Wendy V’s Ponderings (based on a blog by that name I did for five years). I observed that there are way too many prescription drug commercials clogging the airwaves these days, for some ailments I thought I’d never hear talked about openly on television.

Next week our guest is a young singer/songwriter named Molly Hunt. They get younger and they get more talented. Check her out.

Christmas is only a week away! Boy, did that come up fast or what? We played another great batch of Christmas songs, but we also threw in some other classic favorites to mix things up.

Playlist:

(opener) Stang’s Swang – Stevie Ray Vaughan
Jingle Bell Rock – Bobby Helms
Being With You-Smokey Robinson
Silent Night – Platters
Just An Old Fashioned Love Song – Three Dog Night
Christmas Dreamin’ – Brittany Allyn
Temptation Eyes – Grass Roots
Frosty The Blues Man – Denver and the Mile High Orchestra
Don’t Pull Your Love – Hamilton, Joe Frank and Reynolds
Christmas Song – Chicago
Do The Dirty Bird To Dallas – Matt Adams-Daniels
Angie Baby – Alan O’Day
Do Me Wrong But Do Me- Alan O’Day
Undercover Angel – Alan O’Day
The Christmas Song – Nate Bennett
Spanish Harlem – Aretha Franklin
Merry Christmas To Me – Diona Devin
(closer) Goodnight Sweetheart – Spaniels

Our friend Alan O’Day was our second hour guest. He’s just released on CD his major debut album, Appetizers, from 1977. He’s the writer of the hits “Angie Baby” and “Rock and Roll Heaven” as well as his own #1 song “Undercover Angel. Alan talked about “Angie Baby” and some of the meaning interpretations that people had about the song over the years. Alan also talked about the ups and downs of his career and the process of songwriting with great humor and charm. You can find the “Appetizers” album and lots more about Alan at his website at www.alanoday.com .

Christmas is a joyful time for many, but a stressful time for others. T.J. spoke from the heart about recent losses in his family and the anticipation of seeing a son he hasn’t seen in 32 years. I reminded everyone that not all of us fit the media perfect picture of how Christmas should be spent…some of us are single, with no remaining family members, or those too far to travel. However you plan to spend Christmas, keeping in mind the reason for this season, if it satisfies you, is okay.

We’ll be on a two-week break with some “best of” shows and will be back live January 8 with an Elvis tribute. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all. We appreciate you! –RWV and T.J.

T.J. and I agreed that some of the best interviews are those where you’re just relaxed, joking and having fun. So it was with our guest we invited back this week, Brittany Allyn. We featured a bit of her very fine Christmas CD, Christmas Has A Way, which has been quite popular with our listeners. The topics ranged from her Christmas memories, to what sort of toys we had when we grew up (fun and quite nostalgic!). Brittany is a super busy person these days…along with her musical pursuits, she is also launching a food series online! You can find out all those details at her website at www.brittanyallyn.com .

Next week our friend Alan O’Day joins us as a guest in the studio. He’s just released on CD his major debut album, Appetizers, from 1977. He’s the writer of the hits “Angie Baby” and “Rock and Roll Heaven” as well as his own #1 song “Undercover Angel. Great guy, great performer…so don’t miss it! –RWV and TJ

The big day arrived Monday and T.J., Rene and I were off to the 2010 Nashville AIR Awards, sponsored by the March of Dimes. We were nominated in two categories: Best Locally Produced Specialty Show and Best Locally Produced Syndicated Show. We were nominated in both categories along with some well-known and established talent, and to be placed in those categories with them was huge for us. Whether we won or lost, we were going to have a great time.

After a great pasta and salad lunch, it was time to hand out the awards. The winners in our categories were Dawson Mc Allister Live for Best Locally Produced Specialty Show…Dawson has had a remarkable radio ministry toward teens and young adults for many years and the show won in other categories; and the Crook and Chase Countdown for Best Locally Produced Syndicated Show–unfortunately, Charlie and Lorianne had to adjust their taping schedule for the holiday and couldn’t be there (we would have done a photo opp for sure!).

T.J. and Rene had a great time, and for me, I got both the experiences I was hoping for. I finally got to meet and have a picture with our radio newscaster friend Paul Ladd (famous for T.J.’s impressions…”I’m Paul Ladd…”). Paul is quite aware of the entertainment that T.J.’s impressions give, loves them and is an absolutely great sport (and I asked him to demonstrate his broadcast voice for me!). He even agreed with Rene, who said, “T.J. does Paul Ladd better than Paul!” The other experience is I got to have a photo opp with my radio morning drive heroes, Bill Cody and Charlie Mattos of 650 AM WSM. That was totally cool.

It was a neat thing to be part of an event with so many other people with a passion for radio and benefiting a great cause. I think we’ll be back next year! –RWV

We were in geared up mode for the AIR awards luncheon this coming Monday….something we are both excited about and very thankful and humbled to be a part of. It was also time for us to start bringing more Christmas music into the playlist.

Songwriter Spotlight: Beth Browne, Kurt Fortmeyer, Connie Mims

Playlist:

(opener) Stang’s Swang – Stevie Ray Vaughan
If You Want To Get To Heaven – Ozark Mountain Daredevils
Missing You – John Waite
She’s A Lady – Tom Jones
Blue Christmas – Porky Pig
Sunshine – Jonathan Edwards
Paradise – Beth Browne
Too Many Bubbas – Kurt Fortmeyer
Anywhere My Heart Goes – Connie Mims
All I Want For Christmas Is You – Vince Vance and the Valiants
Broken Wings – Mr. Mister
That’s The Way I Always Heard It Should Be – Carly Simon
After The Rain – Norwood
One More Chance – Norwood
A Song For You – Norwood
Want Ads – Honey Cone
The Snow Lay On The Ground -Brittany Allyn
Good Thing – Paul Revere and the Raiders
Old Fashioned Love Song- Three Dog Night
(closer) Goodnight Sweetheart – Spaniels

We tried a new segment on the show today, called “So You Wanna Be On The Radio”, where we interview a listener and see how well he or she might do on the air. Our first “contestant” was our friend Stevie Won-der, who some of our regular listeners know is quite a cook. We talked a little about his 25 year career as a mobile DJ. The consensus was that Stevie did very well.

Our second hour guest was a very talented young man out of Atlanta, (Stephen) Norwood . Just 19 years old, he started his career going in earnest last year, and already he’s had some great accomplishments, from opening for B.B. King to a pre-concert for an Atlanta Braves game! His manager, Jayne Madigan, also joined us in the studio and added some perspective on what it’s like for a young artist to get a career off the ground. If you watch a well-rounded entertainer who can sing and dance, you may think it looks easy. But when Norwood described his typical day of preparation, music and dance lessons and self-care that it takes to achieve a high performance level, it can leave you breathless and give you a new respect for performers. His new single “After The Rain” is raising funds for MusicCares Nashville Flood Relief. He’s a talented and nice person that we think has a very bright future!

We will be on break for two weeks…hope you will enjoy our “best of” shows that we have scheduled: our “Bandstand Bonnie” interview on the 27th and T.J.’s interview with Bill Champlin on December 4. We are thankful for YOU! Have a great Thanksgiving holiday! –RWV and TJ

What a difference one week makes. A complete turnaround from last week with the announcement of two exciting news items:

T.J. and Company is nominated for two 2010 Nashville AIR Awards, for Best Locally Produced Nationally Syndicated Show and Best Locally Produced Syndicated Show. Awards will be announced November 22.

We welcome two new stations to our “see ya on the radio” network: WCPI wcpi913fm.webs.com/ McMinnville, TN 91.3 FM – Saturday 3-5 p.m. Central (live feed)
Radio Free Worcester www.radiofreeworcester.com/ Worcester, PA – Saturday 3-5 p.m. Central (live feed)

The great local group out of Kingston Springs/Nashville, Calico Trail, were our guests in our second hour. They are a fairly sized group, about seven members in all, and we fretted about how we were going to get them all into the tiny studio and set up. Only five members showed up yet somehow we made it work logistically and had a great time. We played some tracks off their CD which will be officially released and available on ITunes on December 1.They talked about songwriting, opening up for artists like Luke Bryan, and some of the fun things that happen in a band. Nice guys, awesome music.

Next week’s guest is a new young talent named Norwood. Hope you’ll check him out!–RWV

It being Halloween weekend, we had our share of ghoulish music to play (including our personal favorite, “I Want My Baby Back” by Jimmy Cross…if you haven’t heard it, you must!). We also had time (and room!) for our friends Runaway Home to play for us in the studio. What a great sound!

Songwriter/artist spotlights this week: Tamalynn Celeste, Jeff Batson, Daryl Burgess
Let’s Stay Together – Al Green
Everything That Glitters (Is Not Gold) – Dan Seals
(closer) Goodnight Sweetheart – Spaniels

As I mentioned, our in-studio guests Runaway Home have a tight, polished sound…and they’ve only sung together since July! They got together after a Fillin’ Station gig in Kingston Springs. Mark Elliott and Gary Culley had been playing there regularly as a duo and one night the McCarter Twins, Lisa and Teresa, dropped by and “ambushed Mark and Gary” as they put it! They tried their voices together and the rest is musical history in the making. Already they are drawing loyal crowds to their shows and are very close to having their first studio release out. Runaway Home also includes bassist Tom Good and percussionist Chip Chipoletti.

Frequency To The Heart: Everything That Glitters… http://www.embraceencouragement.com/0709ew.htm

We are excited about next week’s guest…a guy who I call “a pop music culture American hero”. Do you watch the great “My Music” specials on PBS? We’ve got the guy that puts them together—T.J. Lubinsky! He has done a lot to keep classic music alive and we’ll be talking to him about that. Tune in! –RWV
